I'm trying to figure out something similar to a bag of holding but without the time limitation for living things. I need to be able to keep living things in a bag that has basically the same traits as the bag of holding for long periods of time. Is there another magic item or spell that would allow this? Thanks.
There’s demiplane that kind of gets at what I think you’re going for. For something more drastic, yurn them to stone, put them in the bag of holding (weight may be an issue) then stone to flesh.
Both of these allow a breathing creature to breath normally in any environment (which includes a bag of holding) but, RAW inside a bag of holding any breathing creature will sufficate even if they are breathing normally. To counter this it could be argued that suffication is the inability to breath so therefore it is impossible to sufficate while breathing normally and therefore the rules are in contradiction to each other. As a DM I would certainly allow them to work together, it makes most sense but you would need to check with your DM (if you are the DM take your pick)
As for breathing, you could put them in a Cloak of the Manta Ray or Cap of Water Breathing and put a fish bowl full of water over their head. There are no mechanics for the oxygen saturation of water.
Nothing ages on the Astral plane, so if you can imprison them there, you can grab them at your convenience.

Iron flask works in very specific circumstances, it only works on creatures not native ot the plane you are currently on.
Portable hole has the same 10 minute restriction as a bag of holding (dispite being much larger)
A can't see Cloak of the manta ray and Cap of water breathing are very much down to the DM. Putting a fishbowl over your head hardly means you are underwater especially if the action means the fishbowl is then empty of water. You would still also have the issue I raised in tha RAW a breathing creature can (debateably) sufficate in a portable hole even if they are able to breathe by magical means.

There is no context provided by the OP, so anything is on the table.
Portable Hole creates a space "on another plane", so it can be used to circumvent the limitations of the Iron Flask. It also has more room to work with, so "long periods of time" becomes more manageable.
If your DM doesn't like a fish bowl, then just fill the Portable Hole with water like a bacta tank and call it good.
Your post wasn't present when I was typing my response, so I couldn't take it into account. Sure, the RAW wording of the two items could be used to imply that suffocation is a magical and inevitable effect, but I think any reasonable DM would houserule a little bit of realism if the player had a half-decent plan.
If we had a bag of holding we just left the top open until the last second. Then just hope.
If we had the handy Necklace of adaptation then we were home free. In goes the gnome or halfthing and the bag goes onto the luggage baggage going into the secure place.
Just remember that our DM let us just fold the bags opening over and the person inside could just push his way out. If its tied he needs to cut his way out thus destroying the bag. The portable hole is even worse. If he cuts his way out he ends up someplace you do not want to be. Someone needs to let him out.

A portable hole specifically allows someone inside a folded-up hole to make a Strength check to get out of it, which doesn't break the hole.

Less drastic but open to interpretation is combining a bag of holding (or portable hole) with either a necklace of adaptation or ventilating lungs

Your best option is the Iron Flask. That's the classic "Pokeball" option.
Some other options are:
Magic Item: Rod of Security, Portable Hole
