So my character is a fey wandering ranger that was stolen as a child and raised by Titania and other archfey. My DM has homebrewed a lot of this world but it's basically as if a D&D world were to "spill" out into modern America. Titania sent me on a mission to spy on this organization who has been experimenting with forming adventuring parties to handle things that the American military have no experience in dealing with. During my espionage, I recovered case files containing mimic and blink dog sightings as well as possible plans to go to war with creatures like us. I reported all this to Titania and she told me to "Go to the leader of the organization. Find their second and end them."
The catch is that my bestfriend from my party has developed a romantic interest in the second she was referring to. My DM worded it so their would be loopholes but I'm struggling. Can anyone help me succeed my mission without actually ending a life unnecessarily? Thanks in advance!
This is an exact-words deal. Are those the exact words? If so, you were told to "Go to the leader of the organization. Find their second and end them."
First Malicious Compliance: Add a Comma. " Go to the leader, find the second, end them". Which them? You were told to find the leader's second and end them. End the leader instead. You have successfully "ended them".
Second Malicious Compliance: which organization? Is the leader of this organization also the captain of a bowling team? Maybe they have more than one second; find a different second and end them.
Third Malicious Compliance: second what? Second hand? Second foot? Second car? Second date? Titania should'a been more specific.
Fourth Malicious Compliance: do exactly what Titania asked. Go to the leader, find the second in command, kill him. Then have your cleric/druid/artificer/dingdong cast Revivify. You ended the second, exactly as required. You just un-ended him after that. Titania didn't say not to, after all.
Really, this particular wording is so rife with holes I almost feel like Titania knew what she was doing. This is a Faerie Queen of the Summer Court, she knows better than this. Prepare for her to have backup plans and ensure she's not trying to play you, as best you can.

At a glance, "end them" could be willfully misunderstood, like poking them with the end of a stick, hitting them with a book titled the end, ect.
Alternately them could refer to either the leader or the second.
Get the second in command to be pro- or demoted. Ending the leader's relation to them.

Them can also be interpreted as a plural, so you could destroy the group without killing the second.
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
Convince them to retire. You've ended their career.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
