So... in a few days I'll be fulfilling a bucket list even, I'm going to GenCon. I've been to smaller regional cons and such, so I'm not a newbie as far as that goes. But this is GenCon. I know they have the paid events and such, I've been following the press releases, and honestly... I think I'm going to stick to the open play area for the majority of my gaming fun.
I'm sure some of you have attended before and I'm looking for advice. Areas to check out, avoid, all that stuff. Thanks.
Three AM pickup games of Are You A Werewolf during a bomb scare can be surprisingly entertaining. Yes, that's a thing I actually took part in. Somebody noticed an abandoned backpack near a bench outside one of the entrances and this was only a few months after the Boston Marathon bombing, so they gathered up everybody in the building to an interior event hall until the bomb squad was able to check it out (it wasn't a bomb, apparently somebody had just lost their bag and nobody noticed it until about 2:30 in the morning).
Then there was the time one of the concession stand areas had an electrical fire and the entire convention center had to be evacuated. Again it was a minor incident, I believe somebody promptly put it out with an extinguisher but fire codes and such required a full evacuation until the Fire Department had investigated and cleared it. I wasn't actually in the building at the time but was on staff at True Dungeon, which was in the Marriot across the street at the time and stepped out for a smoke on my break to see literally thousands of bored nerds standing around on the sidewalks and playing Red Rover across the five lane road, mainly calling out cosplayers to come over to their side.
Speaking of True Dungeon, if you have a chance to get in on that it's a bit pricey but totally worth it. I haven't even looked into it since pre-covid but it's definitely already sold out though there are always cancellations and no shows if you're willing to chill out for a bit on a waiting list.
