I initially took Magic Missile as a 1st level spell and only once did I up cast it up to 2nd . My character sheet is counting it against my 2nd and 3rd level spells . Is this typical for spell that can be up casted ? I'm a 5th level Draconic sorcerer .
That is a setting in your character sheet when you create your character. But it isn’t counting against the total spells known, it’s just showing you what will happen if you upcast it.
You can turn it off if you want. On my phone I tapped the manage button by the character name then character settings. Scroll down and you will see Show level-scaled spells, and turn off the slider.
Should be similar on a computer I would think. I’m not using the app, just the mobile site on Safari

By default, the DDB character sheets are set to show all spells you know/have prepared being upcast with every available spell slots.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
