So im kinda new to making characters on this site and im trying to add a feature to my level 1 variant human, but all that shows up is Grappler and some sort of magic thing for deep gnomes. Is that supposed to be how it is? it wont let me add any other feats otherwise.

Without buying stuff or creating a character in a campaign where somebody's got content sharing enabled (and somebody has content), you're limited to the stuff in the basic rules, and there are not many feats.

If you already have the physical books, and you want a specific feat, you can use the homebrew tools to make your own version. (Or you can buy the specific feat without buying the entire book. If you later buy the book, then what you've paid for bits of it is deducted from the price.)

Feats are associated with sourcebooks in most cases.  if you don't own the sourcebooks or have not bought access to the feat a'la cart, you cannot use the feat in character creation.  Most of the game's feats are available in either the PHB or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, with a few mostly-superseded species feats in Xanathar's Guide to Everything and a smattering of one-offs in various other books.
