Of course it all speculation, but when do you think the release will happen? Just curious what the DnDBeyond Forums thinks.
Feel free to give your thoughts and reasonings below.
As for me, I think we will see the new Core Set in the first quarter of 2024 so that they are available for a new Campaign Setting and Adventure later in the year.
I'm thinking a similar timetable, not all three books at once (unless the rules expansion boxed set did really well by their standards, I'm thinking it was more a fizzle but that's just impression not data backed). And mostly timed so the books are relatively fresh for holiday sales numbers.

I would agree with this normally, but with it being the 50th anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons, I think we will see releases starting earlier and be spread out through out the year to try to make the most of it. It doesn't make a lot of sense to release books that rely on the new rules changes before the rules changes themselves.
Then again, they are kind of doing that already in a way.
I’d bet late summer into early fall, just because that seems to be the pattern when they release new editions. They don’t have the huge presence at GenCon they used to, but they do like to have the new hotness out to show off there and have games to run. So I’d think the PHB in early- to mid-August.

I'm thinking 2023 and 2024 will have 2-4 books that sort of "preview" 5.5, releases on the lines of MMM. There's an event WotC uses en lieu of GenCon, D&D Celebration, it's timed to prime holiday sales. Hasbro is a giant retailer who always eyes a specific part of the calendar to assess success. WotC is in line with that strategy.
2024 will be the pathway to 5.5, 5.5. still doesn't come out till later in the year.
Oh, I need to put in my name for 5.5: WOTC PROJEKT D&D 2024 GOLD.

I don't keep abreast of the news about money making shenanigans of Wizards of the Coast.
Core set, you say? So we're moving to 5.5 now, is that it?

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

Nothing has been completely, officially announced as 5.5. They are saying new, revised core rule books will be out in 2024, for D&D’s 50th anniversary. But how drastic the changes will be is anyone’s guess. Based on previous statements that new books would be backward compatible, lots of people call it 5.5, but no one really knows for sure.

WOTC PROJEKT D&D 2024 GOLD
It's speculated that it will be a sort of "consolidated" edition of the present 5e core, some stuff in Tasha's Xanthar's etc., with maybe the race revisions done in MMM applied to the games "core" races, supposedly the MMM monster stat block format is "the future" as well. You're also seeing something like feat ladders, and feats acquired outside of ASI option being experimented with in UA. So most likely a mix of "consolidation" and some of the aforementioned "innovation" (though I imagine we'll be seeing those innovations in products over the next year and half, so also consolidation in that regard). But yes, it's alll speculative, the only thing I think definitively or with real weight was WotC's claim that MMM was a preview of "the next evolution" of D&D.
Alright, thanks. So ... mostly a ploy to sell us stuff we already paid for. Nice.

I won't stop you looking at it that way; but for some their books are a bit worn out, their rules are spread over multiple volumes, etc. Among other things, a new edition consolidates that sprawl and refreshes the look (ideally) in terms of art etc.
Nothing WotC puts forth for sale is required to play D&D. You can work off the SRD and it's not hard to find well curated guides to all the homebrew freely available here and elsewhere. You don't "need" 5.5 or WOTC PROJEKT D&D 2024 GOLD so I don't really see the grievance you're trying to air with the sarcasm.

Oh, hey - don't mind me. It's just who I am: Suspicious of corporations. No, I'm sure the new books will be value for money and all that. I'm just also quite sure I won't be buying them.

I imagine there'll be new rules and mechanics. All we've been told is that it'll be compatible with 5e. That could be as minor a connection as you can still play 5e modules and everything else changes. I wouldn't sign up to buy or not buy based on what little information we have now.

3e came out in August as well, Aug 2K. I think August 2024 will likely be the release date again as well.
Thank you for your time and please have a very pleasant day.
I'm betting we'll see if not a release then like the full book getting leaked in the latter half of the first quarter.
