So I am very very new to DnD…and recently saw the 40% off bundle for the core books with digital and jumped right on it. I normally would only get the physical books but with how integrated the character builder and tools are on dndbeyond I thought it would be worth it with this sale.
Then I was made aware of DnD 2024 release of the new set of core books… I got nervous that the digital content I got would not work with the character builder tool later on dndbeyond when 2024 OneDnD becomes the main version - and so I reached out to support… they pretty much said they don’t know what’s going to happen or whether the character builder tools would still work with the version I bought so I’m crap out of luck at this point…
I am very disappointed with the communication received from support on this and honestly feel like I made a huge mistake..if I had known, I would bought the physical from a local store and skipped the digital for now.. I was genuinely excited to play and this just put a really bad taste to start..
TLDR: DnD support confirming there’s no guarantee that the digital content for the 2014 core books will be made compatible with the character builder tool later when OneDnD comes out. DnD Beyond support also could not confirm how the legacy digital content would be accessed or accessible even..so you may want to reconsider your decision for purchasing the digital core books and just stick with the physical for now
The design premise of One D&D is "backwards compatibility". under "sources" at the top is the most recent version of Unearthed Arcana, which is going to give you an idea of how the classes will look. For the most part, except differences to be relatively minor, and expect more options in the 2024 books.
THe 2014 books will continue to be used for the most part, but they will be taking all those "extra books" (like Tasha's) and folding a lot of the stuff from there into the main game.
Release date for the new books is likely to be late in the year.
Any changes will almost certainly be generally light, so you can absolutely get the books now and then update as you feel the need later next year -- with little overall impact to the character builder.
That said, there is an additional thing in play here: The Virtual TableTop. The development of that will go along with any changes they do make, and because they want folks to use it (probably at an additional cost), they will work extra hard to make it as smooth a transition as possible.
Been through 5 system changes over the last 40 years. This will be one of the easiest, no matter how much moaning you read on these forums, lol.

Thank you for your response! I hope it goes smoothly with minimal impact like you said, made me feel a lot better!
