A horizon walker ranger can cast Ethereal Step and move into the Ethereal realm.
So lets say I have a chest or crate with some sort of treasure in it I need to hide it so I cast Ethereal step and bring it into the Ethereal realm. Would it stay there (and where I left it) when I leave the realm and return to the material plane? Would I be able to return later to retrieve it?
I'd say yes. With a 7th level spell on par with Plane Shift, there shouldn't be any issue with using it to hide a chest. This is a more expensive way of emulating the spell Secret Chest
The ethereal plane is a replica of the material plane, kind of like the upside down in stranger things, so if you hid a chest in the ethereal plane, it would stay in that position, meaning that you could retrieve it, but if you, say move 20 miles after you hide the chest, you would have to walk 20 miles to retrieve the chest.
Plus you should also hide it on the Ethereal plane. Other beings reside there also.
I would more than likely use a minor risk rule. After a few days (dms discretion) I would have a 5% cumulative chance of something inside, including the whole chest, being stolen. Plus/Or if the chest is large enough a creature could be patient and use it as a way to escape the ethereal plane. Waits inside hidden or when you come back force you to transport him also.

HI I thought I'd ask the community....

Thx for the info.

I did see that spell, but being a ranger...it's not a spell for him.
