I LOVED that we got a code with the new start edition, but I like having the books physically AND would think it would make more people buy the books if you got the codes in addition to the books.
If they already talked about this, please link me to where they discussed this! I thought it was interesting that they it ONCE and then ever again.
I'd love to get more boxed set adventures from WoTC. Unique DM screens, the handout cards in the Essentials Kit (they really helped my new players), and more dice!!!
Doing that with the books would really piss off folks that already have said books. If they were in someway able to do that with books that hasn't been released yet, while it would be awesome but it would increase the price of the books due to the fact that WotC and D&D Beyond are 2 different companies and both deserve money for the products they produce. WotC is paid a fee for every book D&D Beyond sales, where WotC deserves what they earn off the dead tree versions they sell.
I remember this discussion from previous editions. If you have a code in a book on the shelf people can open the book and look at the code. If you have the staff add a code in when you buy the book - what happens if they forget? It's a complex proposal without an obvious solution.

Thank you,

The code with the Essentials Kit was an experiment made possible due it being a sealed box product. It was not a new standard going forward for books
Find my D&D Beyond articles here
Codes are really only possible with products that are sold sealed. D&D books currently can be flipped through and looked at before buying.
