I absolutely hate the way the site does pre-order purchases.
When I go to buy something I want the complete purchase price taken out immediately. Not half of it and then half of it and another random time that I don't know about.
I might not necessarily have the money in my account at whatever random time they decide to take the money out. Why can they not take out the complete money when I make the purchase?
The technology to manage this is called a checkbook register. Back when people wrote checks you didn't kow when it would go through so you managed to what you did, not what has already happened.

Do they? Have to admit I’ve only ever bought digital preorders on here (I’m in the UK and can’t buy physical or bundles from here, have to go to a different site) but whenever I preorder something they take the money straight away, which honestly feels odd since the likes of Amazon don’t take money until release
Yeah I understand. Keep my books better. Sometimes that's difficult. Things move quickly and fluidly.
My question still stands. Doesn't make sense. They take half of the money out when you order and then half the money the other half at some random point in time
I don't think it's to expect someone to watch their account like a hawk and know exactly what's due and what's not. There's a lot going on in life to know exactly what's due when it's an irregular expense. Could I do it? Probably, this is one of my strengths, but I'm also aware that not everyone has my way of thinking etc.
What would probably be better would be to be transparent. Say, explicitly, "we'll take $X right. It now, then Y days before release, we'll take the remaining $Z", or whatever their schedule is. At least then, there is some warning on what's happening.

It seems that the marketplace has two different transaction flows—deduct payment when you pre-order digital (pretty standard) and deduct payment on shipping when you pre-order physical (again, pretty standard)
When you place a digital + physical purchase what is likely happening is the backend is automating two different purchases at once; a digital transaction and a physical one. That would explain why some money comes out immediately (to cover the digital purchase) and some later (to cover the physical on shipping).
