I trying to design a Bladesinger character but I am having trouble deciding on an appropriate background. All the usual suspects for a wizard such as acolyte and sage just do not seem to fit. Does anyone have any suggestions.

How are you envisioning the bladesong?
I've got a character in mind with a South Pacific vibe whose bladesong is essentially a haka. The Sailor or even the Fisher background (from Saltmarsh) would work for him
Figure out what your bladesong looks/sounds like or is based on, and it might give you some background ideas

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
Other things to consider - * what race are they and how does that affect background? * are they from the Forgotten Realms or another published world that has bladesinger/Swordmage traditions that might impact background? * is there anything special you want in their background and what backgrounds might best fit that? * have you talked to the DM about using a 1D&D custom background instead of a 5e background? * have you talked to the DM about possible backgrounds that would include bladesinger/Swordmage from their world?
all can have major impacts on the background chosen. For example I run a modified (heavily in some regions) Forgotten Realms world that has at least 3 somewhat different elven bladesinger traditions (Evermeet, Cormanthor, high Forest) a Cormyrian war Wizard Swordmage tradition, a Turmish Genasi Swordmage tradition, a Tymantherian Dragonborn Swordmage tradition, an Anauroch Bedine tradition and a Dalesland tradition out of a reconquered/freed Teshendale so there would be lots of different possibilities. Best to talk to your DM.

I am playing a bladesinger who has the pirate background. Lots of fun.
