I'm a 30 year D&D Player, fan boy, and DM. I don't know how many hours I've spent sitting at a table with several friends. At least once a week, for well and truly three quarters of my life, plus some small change. Thirty years of stories told, deeds both heroic, and malignant. Monsters slain, Gods felled, and adventures had. How many laughs, gasps, and cheers shared between friends over pizza and dice rolls.
And I'm done.
Not with games in general of course. Dice will still be rolled at the table, fun still had, stories still told. I've not slain my last dragon, rolled up my last character, nor run my last game. Table Top Gaming has been a major part of my life, and I would sooner lose a hand than leave gaming behind. But what I don't need to do is include WotC.
The actions of the last several days have demonstrated, to me anyway, that the loyalty and devotion we have shown this game, since before it was main stream, going all the way back to when players like me had to do so in secret or risk being ostracized and criticized by peers, families, etc. (If you grew up in the Bible Belt you'll know what I mean) means nothing when compared to how many more dollars you may be able to wring from us. I understand all business' need to make a profit, but there is a right way, a moral standard to be upheld. To so blatantly break faith with your community in the way that you have, then try to convince us it was all for our benefit? I don't buy it. Miss me with that noise.
Yes, I realize my voice here will mean nothing in the grand scheme. No one important will ever read this, and no one that does read it will care. There is almost a certain symmetry to the idea that my first post here is also likely to be my last. And that's alright by me. This isn't written to change the world. More so I can get it off my own chest, and walk away fresh. I'm a very private person, and I don't usually bother with things like this. But silence is the same as complicity, and private though I may be I know where my line is drawn, and I know when it's been crossed.
To those involved in D&D who love the game and the community I say thank you for all the memories. To those more interested in my wallet I say I have contributed the last dollar to your enterprise that I aim to. And it doesn't look like I'm alone.
So goodbye. On to other stories, and new memories, with familiar faces over pizza and dice rolls. My crew and I will still laugh, cheer, and sigh. Monsters will be slain. Gods will fall, and stories will be told.
But you won't be there. You don't deserve to be.
