So I know why the DM is able to view the other characters' character sheets. My question is (and I never thought about it until recently) why are the other players able to view each other's characters? Is it in case one of them isn't there? Or is there a variety of reasons and I can't think of any?

I'll roll to see how fun this is. Oh look at that. Natural 20
I don't know. Usually you could ask to look at someone's character sheet and 99% of the time you don't have anything to hide. Backstory is not revealed, so the only thing they can see is stuff they should or could know (class, race, spells, and items).
You can set your character to private, then only DM will be able to view sheet.

Yeah I was gonna suggest that the reason is that you have the sheet set to be publicly viewable, haha.
