I just got a new DM after switching to overnights at work and my whole schedule changing. Man, this guy gave me one of the best games I have played yet. It is surreal. The party works together like a well oiled machine, people play off each other's backgrounds and we have shared party goals, and when debauchery happens we're all on the same page. The DM meanwhile has been keeping the campaign entertaining and letting us roll the story as we go rather than forcing us to do what they say the DM will come up with a creative way to nullify whatever we were trying to attempt in a way that doesn't feel cheap because it makes sense with the situation.
So when we started recruiting NPCs and creating an army; I am a Knight so it is part of my background, the DM went along with it. Then we ended up with twelve strong and he doesn't just want to take them away. Instead he is having us go up against an army of orcs and we just had our first skirmish with their scouts who we got the drop on. We split our group into units so that each of our four players had three NPCs suited to their fighting style. Being the flashy noble knight I took three on horse back to charge down the road with spears and lances in half plate. The Rogue took the most stealthy, a group of former pirates, to wrap around behind the orca on the road. While the druid and bard took the rest and snuck through the forest on either the side of the road.
Surprise Round: My unit unleashes a belly of heavy crossbow bolts and then readies their spears and lances for the charge moving up ten feet putting up 60 feet out from the orcs. Everyone else was still sneaking up.
Round One: The orcs run up 30 feet towards my unit. The bard and druid unleash a volleyball of arrows from the tree line and it becomes a killing box. The rogues finish off the back rank throwing knives and taking out any they can. My unit charges up trampling all the orcs, but we did miss the most.
Round Two: The orca are confused and begin splitting off so that they are on their own. The druid and bard emerge from the forest in a charge and decimated all but a few remaining orcs. The rogues dispatch all but one. I wound the last orc before my brand new horse named Herby hooves it to death claiming it's first kill.
The DM said it was a taste and while the NPCs faired well we're going to have casualties if we're not careful. Best DnD game yet and I have been playing a long time.
