Imagine being a young impressionable first-timer to the world of Dungeons and Dragons. You've heard of some of the lore, understand that you can play as anything from an uncannily accurate elven archer to a kleptomaniacal dwarf with Alzheimer's. So you draw up a tiefling rogue, wanting to fill a party need while playing a fun looking race. Being unaware of the full extent of this epic roleplaying experience, you cheerfully say that of course the 4th edition is fine. Then you play it. End of horror story.
... Okay, joking, but just a little. In any case, at this time you're just a kid and you think it'll be a blast to play with your whole nuclear family. Your siblings and parents create characters as well, but little do you know that the DM, in this case your father, has a very particular process for inducting new players. One of your more experienced siblings plays a drow, and the worst part is that this character is going up against the party. To make matters worse, the other four party members don't all know each other, and need to get meeting and joining up out of the way. Upon meeting, before any discussion can be had, the drow and a small army of kobolds enter scene. Now, if these characters were a higher level it may have worked out, but being innocent first level adventurers really doesn't tip the balance in their favor here. The battle begins and within two rounds three party members are dead and the dragonborn of the party has been captured by the kobolds to be a slave god. As the deaths of these characters sink in, matters are only made worse by the fact that it was your oldest sibling who decimated your group. The end.
This was my introduction to D&D. Suffice to say it didn't turn me away from it. This threads a great idea, can't wait to hear about others.
Post all your D&D horror stories here! Most people have them, and everyone loves to read them!
Fighter: We need to get out of here! The Goblins are overwhelming us!
Wizard: Time to use that sketchy item the DM never stops grinning about *rolls a nat one*
Barbarian(in rage as usual): Aw Hellllllll Naw . . .

I was a college sophomore and my girlfriend and 2 of her friends wanted to play with us.
It was great having women in our group. But their attention span lasted until the first grain beverage was consumed.
The DM said if I paid her one 1gp she'd let me role with advantage.
