Do players and DMs think Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk will allow level 5 characters who have completed the Lost Mines campaign to continue on?
Just going through Lost Mines with some new players as a first time DM and it would be really cool if we could continue straight into this setting.
...and maybe even give some Lore out about what exactly these Mysterious Obelisks are. This is probably the WOTC product I am most excited about, but that's not an excitement based in more than grim fatalism.
Anyway, it'd be nice if it also gave an easy-in for Stormwreck Isle or the other one too.

While the Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk takes place in the same Phandalin area as Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure from the Starter Set, it's not clear what other ties exist between them if any and if guidelines are included to start it after finishing the other. Other notable differences is their level;
Lost Mine of Phandelver is level 1-5
Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk is level 1-12.
There are a couple of published adventures that have the first few levels as an intentional throwaway introduction where you can skip them if you want without significant harm to the overall story (namely, Storm King's Thunder and Rime of the Frostmaiden are the two I'm aware of), so they could.
On the other hand, I dislike the idea. That's five levels that they could spend building up the narrative and so forth that they instead build in as inherently skippable. Personally, I'd prefer a cohesive adventure.

Possibly. Storm King's Thunder was a level 1-11 adventure with an optional way of starting at level 5.
However, the description for this adventure says that the range will be from levels 1-12 for Phandelver and Below, so I wouldn't count on it having another starting point or even keeping to the same canon that was there in Lost Mine of Phandelver.
It's hard to build a module with a town that players may have already interacted with, changed, or burned down half of (my group definitely didn't do this lol). Also, just adding in multiple different levels to start the adventure at can be hard and hasn't worked too well previously.
Anyways, I love Phandelver and am quite excited for the new adventure regardless of whether or not it can serve as a continuation for the old one.

Also keep in mind that in addition to lost mines Phandalin is the town that 5 other adventures are based out of: 1) Dragon of Icespire Peak ( L1-7) 2) Storm Lord’s Wrath (L7-9) 3) sleeping Dragon’s Wake (L9-11 ) 4) Divine Contention (L11 - 13) 5) Aquisitions Inc ( L1-5)
with a bit of reworking I’ve even combined this sequence with the Saltmarsh adventures for a more extended campaign. Right now they have finished Lost Mines and are part way through Dragon.

In the trilogy adventured Beyond Dragon of Icespire Peak, the only adventure that revisit Phandalin is Storm Lord's Wrath, the other two remains in Lelion areas.
I’m not seeing any preorder bonuses… I wonder if there will be any?
They almost never post the preorder bonuses right away, but have historically always had preorder bonuses. I expect the same will occur here and they’ll announce the bonuses a bit closer to release. It should also be noted, even if you order before they announce the preorder bonuses, you still receive those bonuses when they are released.
I feel like I read somewhere, I don't remember where, that PaB: tSO was actually going to use Lost Mines of Phandelver for its first six levels. It would make sense for WotC to do that - it's pre-written content and would be pretty easy to reuse

I highly doubt they would fill a significant portion of the adventures page counts with recycled material already published. But if you remember where you have read this, it would be great to share a link.
D&D Product Manager Chris Lindsay: ''the Phandelver Campaign will indeed be an expansion of the original Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure. There is, however, a twist in that the book will include a heavy dose of horror.''
Story designer Chris Perkins: “further explore the mystery of the obelisks that have cropped up in so many of our adventures, the adventure will return to Phandelin, where an obelisk begins to unleash monsters on the small town''

Yes Lost Mine of Phandelver is available for free on D&D Beyond, but other adventures also featuring Phandalin have no bundle with it so i doubt Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk will be. The most likely outcome is that notable locations from the Lost Mine of Phandelver will be revisited, such as Phandalin, Wave Echo Cave or Thundertree.
Ok, the prospect that levels 1-5 might be LMoP has put me quite off. Definitely not preordering it, I'll wait to see what exactly they intend with that text before buying. LMoP wasn't the greatest as it was, and if they've just copied and pasted, I'm not paying full price for it. If they've just got some quests inspired by LMoP, maybe?

Even if it is a reprint, of something that's now free, I still might pick it up. I'm running a long-running Phandelver campaign (we only get to play 3-4 times per year so this has been going for several years at this point). And it might just end right around the time it comes out. So for me, it would be a nice way to continue with those characters.
At least they're being up front about it, which is all I really ask.

What the devs said on it is that: Phandelver Campaign 2023: What We Know So Far
Agreed, recycling that amount of material from an existing adventure would be gross.
*It's late, I'm sure I've done "too much quoting here".
In all fairness Phandelver's on free vend somewhere on DDB, I think they'd just bundle it in - good PR if signposted.

Frankly, this is the one thing that I'm really interested in.
I use Phandelver as an intro for new players all the time. More is better.
