I am a team player at heart. In the (very few - I'm old) groups I've joined recently, I've been perfectly happy to fill any role wot needs filling, with a preference to taking over an NPC who might be able to upgrade to a player slot. Otherwise what does the party need? I'm that. I like all classes. If it doesn't matter, I will cheerfully go random (DnDB has a random character generator).
...but in that theme, the obvious class (to me) is Druid. Especially if you're pre-level-3, you can grow to fill any role, if you're not aiming to be the best in each role necessarily (team player). Even my Druid-of-the-Land (and Fire Gensasi, all from the random character generator) is sporting good armour so he can off-tank, he's sorta-main-healing (other characters have some good options), and now he's speccing into damage spells.
Druids are just nice all-rounders that can move into whatever gap the party has.
Edit: The druid is level 2, enjoys speaking in ryhmes, and has so far (helped by 3 nat 20's in the span of 25 minutes) convinced a sprite and some satyrs to give them 2 healing potions.
Artificer! Or cleric. But yeah artificer is great! :) They're a nice toolbox (pun intended) class. They're good for filling out a team if the party is missing any roles, they can heal, they can frontline, they can be the skill monkey, they will likely be the only person good at int checks, and they have LOTS of nice utility spells at their disposal. Great class overall. :)

Artificer. It’s the ultimate support character/skill monkey, and can also stand out on their own. Bard is a close second as it is also a great support class/party face, but can also stand out.
My favorite is wizard. Necromancer for no-penalty Create Magen, Bladesinger for a more well rounded simulacra army, and diviner for influencing the future.
Cleric. They can fill in as primary or backups to multiple roles at the same timeand have a huge amount of flexibility for what they do best based on their domain selection. Tank, healer, support caster, and damage dealer are all things I regularly do with my Life Cleric.
Ranger, easily and by far. The concept of a character who wants to explore new frontiers and see new horizons speaks to me on a personal level, and the idea of a character who fights monsters happens to speak to my sensibilities when it comes to media consumption (e.g., Buffy, Supernatural, Castlevania, etc.) Put them together and you have a class that's pretty much designed for me. Especially as half-casters who get to dabble in both sword and sorcery -and the not-nearly-overused Primal magic as their source, at that.
And whether you prefer the PHB version or the Tasha version, it is probably now the second most customizable class out there, behind Warlock.
I’m with envoy, ranger for me - solid battle abilities, exploration, magical use even some healing. Capable of taking on adventures single handed in a way no other class can. Really no weak spots anywhere.
Rogue, because it makes me feel like I'm more able to jump out of the shadows from behind someone and stick some very sharp pointy metal thingies through them.
Just wondering, does that make me mentally unstable to any degree?

Gotta go with Ranger. Not so for any mechanical or rules issue. But it just appealed to me way back in the late 80's when i started playing....before i was cryonically frozen to keep from aging for 20 years.
So when i got back into DND and found a great DM running a long campaign (Annihilation), i took up ranger. Which actually ended up working out just getting through Chult.
Wizard. One time our party was hit with a drow patrol of, like, eight drow and two giant spiders. One fireball, a lot of failed saves, and some really high dice rolls later, and on the first tirn we were only fighting two guys. I love this ridiculous overpowered boom spell and always will.
I love playing support characters. Let others be the face of the party, let others strike the killing blow, let others have their names sung in the Halls. I am content to be the rock that never falters, the shield that never breaks, and the final hope of rescue when all goes wrong. My teammates may be fighting great and terrible enemies - giants, dragons, armies of fiends and undead - and if they are successful they will win treasure of gold, and gemstones, and magic.
But I fight a far greater enemy. For my battle is against Death itself. I am the one who wades amid the din of war and reaches down to raise up a fallen ally. I am the one who stands bleeding but not broken between the wizard and the arrows. I am the one who stares the Valkyrie in the eyes and yells, "F*ck off, ladies. These are mine." And when I am successful, my treasure is not gold, my name will not be sung. My treasure is my teammates. My name may not be known by the bards, but it is respected by Death.
Thus far, I've played a Fighter, a Paladin, a Monk, and a Bard. (A little dabbling in others, but not enough to really form an opinion.) I think Paladin was my favorite, because it really presents a concept strongly. Something like a Warlock is very flexible to let you express a particular oddball concept you might have, but a Paladin is a Paladin, and it really works. You feel like a bulwark against evil. The guy everybody rallies behind.
I suppose it's a tiny bit cluttered. The Divine Sense feature is kinda pointless, and the immunity to disease might be unnecessary. Not taking your oath at level 1 still feels really dumb. But it basically gives you awesome stuff at every level, and feels really satisfying to play.

I love Wizard's ability to just get a ton of known spells. That said, a Druid tends to surprise the DM. It really opens up a lot of unusual stuff.
