Would you mind providing perhaps a more specific description of what you’re talking about, for those of us that didn’t buy the book? Don’t own it personally as I stepped away from Dragonlance a long while ago, and I feel like Lord Soth was savagely nerfed.

They already have a feat with them, and it allows access to certain 4th level feats. The first part of the rule is for the backgrounds that don't have a feat

The playtest material so far has definitely promoted the idea that feats are going to be a core component rather than an "option."

Well, this certainly makes me wonder how they’re going to keep Humans competitive with this. I myself always used the “Variant” Human, but changed the Ability Increases to +2 & +1, while keeping the Bonus Skill and free Feat. I always felt other Races had a leg up on them.
Okay, thanks @6thLyranGuard, it’s good to know. Makes me consider adopting this for my own Homebrew (it’s still a ways away but I like thinking ahead).
Just took a moment to finally read up on the likely changes to come with the “new” edition (or next stage or whatever). I can say with absolute conviction I will NOT be picking it up. There are a very few small changes I might like but that is all. Thanks for this thread @Princedg5678. Without it I might still have been uninformed and skeptical.

Based on everything I just read, it’s not happening. If certain things that are important to me remain unchanged, or they change the changes they are making, great. But if changes like the ones I read on Dicebreaker are part of this supposed next stage, I will stick with the 5e Rules already present.
It's a playtest, not a preview. WotC has stated that a number of the ideas that they proposed weren't really being considered as things that would make it into the game, but instead were in the UAs solely to gauge the community's reactions and thought processes.
And anyways, if you're so opposed to the direction the playtest are experimenting with going in, you should participate in them and make your opinions heard.

So the playtest is definitely encouraging bonus feats. Certain feats will be selectable by background and the Variant human will become standard human, and slightly better as they'll have +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 starting ASI like all others and can also get easy Inspiration (advantage roll of choice) once per day. And yes, this means starting with 2 feats.
It is worth noting this is "backwards", as in previous edition, notably 3rd to my knowledge, feats were more prominent because everyone started with one and humans got 2, and you got a new one every 3 levels while still getting stat ASIs every 4. Basically people missed that, many still implement it so the playtest has been leaning to bringing that back and getting positive feedback on it.
The playtest basically promotes a custom background, allowing you to tailor the background benefits to your individual character backstory.

I love the idea because feats are a great way to customise the character. For background it greatly provides a way to determine features from your backstory that makes sense as your character transitions from who they were into an adventurer. The idea of a Soldier background giving no weapon or armour proficiencies meant getting no useful benefit if you were going to play a caster. With the bonus feat, however, you can correct that to take a feat granting some martial benefits or proficiencies that would make sense for an ex-soldier to have even they've recently dropped the blade for spells instead. Or maybe a fighter who takes the Healer feat to represent a field medic.
It also corrects the logical brainspasm of taking "Magic Initiate" at 4th level by which point as a caster you are well beyond actually being an "Initiate".
And since everyone gets it, there's no balance issues and encounter difficulty isn't even likely to need much adjustment (and adjustments that are necessary are easy and simple enough).
I see absolutely no downsides and for me it is the best part of the playtest and direction they're going. The only thing of concern are half-ASI feats, but that is easy enough to factor by limiting those to 4th level or just homebrewing a version that doesn't increase an ability.

By the way, apologies to everyone for taking that turning into commentary on however-you-want-to-call the next “edition” of D&D. I’d just never really looked too deeply at it before and I felt like this was some kind of wake up call.
It's all good. The point of brainstorming is "there are no bad ideas," and the point of playtesting is "except for those ones." The designers do the first half, we do the second. It's important to remember that it's not an appropriate response to act like the sky is falling and that D&D will never be the same every time a designer has a bit of a out-there idea and wonders if the community would like it.
But anyways, there's a lot of interesting ideas being floated in the UAs, I recommend checking some of them out.

I know it's tangential from the OP, but it's worth noting that in the UA 1D&D, the feats you can choose are quite restricted; there are some that you can pick, but many have the restriction that you have to be at least level 4 (or something like that, you can't have them as part of your Background at the very least). So no Sharpshooter as your Background feat.
In terms of Dragonlance, it would indicate that it is "tougher" and characters are buffed to compensate.
