So, while I'm having fun with my character, they are butting heads with the party a bit. I know there are plans to deal with the headbutting, but I kinda like the reasons my character has to butt heads and don't want them to get over it as easily as the rest of the party want's them to. My potential solution is to get my character 'kidnapped' and replaced with a Changeling. The biggest problem is, my character is a lvl 3 Paladin, so they've taken their oath now and can't lie. Obviously my replacement would be a liar by nature/career, so I can't make them a lvl 3 Paladin, right? Is there an oath I can get that would allow lying, or a class similar enough to paladin that I don't have right now that I could use to get away with it https://100001****/https://1921681254.mx/? Thoughts?
There is no rules reason why a Changeling cannot be a Paladin. Nor do the rules prohibit Paladins from lying. All they need to do is abide by their oath—as long as they do not break that oath, everything else is up to the player and DM.
That said, you need your DM to sign off on this before it can go into effect. Based on what you have posted here, I could very well see a DM telling you “no.”
From this post, and grading it in the light most favourable to you, I see a couple red flags about you as player. I do not think one person butting heads with the party is a bad thing, provided that butting heads occurs only between characters, and is not spilling out to the player level.
What I see here, however, looks like it could be a player—you—problem. Not only did you say everyone else was against you, you also indicated they were making metagame-level plans to try and fix your character, a strong indication the issues have become player issues, not only character issues.
Moreover, your response to their plan comes off a bit like “and now I’ll troll them by doing a switch-a-roo to a Changeling, rather than address the issues with my character.” The fact you are asking strangers on the internet for help does not look great either—as I said, this is something you need to talk with your DM about, and it looks a bit like you are trying to go over your DM’s head by getting internet support first.
Now, I want to be clear, I do not know you as a player, so I do not make any actual conclusions about the above. I merely want to point this out because I think you should seriously consider your motivations in making this switch, and whether your motivations might come off as problematic to others in the group.
Just to expand a bit on what caerwyn said. When you are butting heads with the others, is it just characters doing it, while the players are laughing along with the situation? Take a few minutes and read the room, or better yet, just ask them. Character v character conflict can be really fun, but if it’s spilling over into player vs player, that’s a problem. The good news is, you’re realizing something is off, just make sure you are fixing the right problem.
And if you find yourself saying “but that’s what my character would do,” probably 95% of the time it’s a red flag that you are doing something that is making the game less fun for the other players. If that’s what’s happening, you should stop. People get kicked out of games all the time.
What if the changeling was a different subclass, and you wait to see how long it takes your party to notice while you try to hide/downplay the different abilities. Nobody bats an eye when you divine smite, but if anyone catches you Hunter's Marking (only available to Vengeance Paladin) an enemy they might ask "have you always been able to do that?" and you quickly say "yep" or "I don't know what you're talking about." Allow the time it takes your party to discover your deception (not just class, but maybe subtle changes in character) to be the countdown to the quest where they have to rescue your original character.
Or, maybe they like the changeling better and you just play them now, depending on how much the "head-butting" affected your relationship with the party.
