Could a regular Lich use soul gems? I know a Demilich has the option to use these, but is there anything saying a regular Lich couldn't? I know a Lich has a phylactery that can only hold one soul which the lich uses to maintain itself, but from my understanding, these soul gems trap souls in them too. So, could a regular Lich have soul gems thus trapping souls in however many it has and eventually use them for the phylactery?
Or No. Whatever works in your campaign. A dryad lich might store her soul in a petrified tree. Perhaps there is a Norse lich who stores his soul in Odin's missing eyeball.
Is coffee good for you? How much water should we drink in a day? Scientists in the real world keep changing their minds (Or new scientists come along with different opinions) History seems to be re-written on a daily basis.
That's the great thing about fiction - it can't be disputed. And yet people somehow still do....Han Solo/Gweedo who shot first?
I wonder if the question really was "Did my DM cheat?"
PS I'm not sure there is such a creature as a "regular lich." Monster Manual entries are just one example of the creature being detailed.
The official answer may be that Soul Gems trap souls - which is not something a lich would necessarily want.
Thanks, this is a good answer. I just try to be a little consistent with these things in case one of my players is hardcore into the actual WotC written lore and such.
The DM in my case can't cheat because he's me 😉
