It's a bit drawn out but here is the story of my first dragon attack as a DM. Feel free to share your own.
So last night my party encountered the first dragon i've put into my first (and so far only) campaign. It was an adult white dragon whose lair was deep within a frozen lake. The party (a berserk barbarian, necromancer wizard, evocation wizard, grave domain cleric, drunken master monk, and a barbarian orc npc) were all level 6 and were just powerful enough to survive the first breath weapon. The dragon knocks out two pc's quickly but is struggling against the barbarians and the necromancer's zombies (cleric was not happy when he pulled those out, being a follower of Kelemvor). The dragon then flees into one of the many tunnel entrances in its lair and plans to attack the necromancer, who is all on his own. This results in the necromancer dying and the dragon being dropped to single digit hp, all the while the dragon is failing to regain his breath weapon.
The cleric reluctantly casts revivify on necromancer while the dragon escapes back into the tunnels to lick its wounds and watch the party. Suddenly the (evil) necromancer flees to the exit dropping most of his stuff as he runs. He was planning on giving up on the group and going back to the cult the party was fighting with (long story). The party pick up on this and realize he is trying to abandon them. They attempt to stop him, all the while the dragon is failing to get its breath weapon back. Eventually the necromancer knocks out or delays everyone but the cleric who decides to save his dying team rather than capture the wizard.
So the necromancer is about to get away when he tells me "I'm going to prepare melf's acid arrow to hit the next creature that attacks me" then the dragon finally regains its breath weapon and wants to put down the adventurers by taking advantage of their quarrel. The dragon burst out of the ground and hits the necromancer with its breath weapon while he was at 1hp, killing the necromancer instantly. The necromancer manages to hit the dragon, who is on 2hp, with his 3d6 spell. The cleric who was just beyond the 60ft breath weapon watches the blast of icy wind freeze his traitorous companion solid, meanwhile the dragon's corpse slumps against the ground, its upper skull melting away.
All in all it was an amazing battle and all the player enjoyed the chaotic results, the former necromancer included.
