I have over the last few years I have recently gotten into dnd and purchased all the books and so on and now the game has updated, whilst this isnt a bad thing. Is it worth updating to get the new books, I understand it is backwards compatible. I just dont want to spend another $200. Is 2024 edition that much different/better, I am sure there are many good things but is it worth it. I am honestly just annoyed the game updated right after I had gotten done purchasing everything lol, couldn't have waited a few more years lol.
I've adopted with the mindset that 2014 ed will get no more content, so I'm buying in. If that's not an issue for you, I wouldn't adopt.
In case you do, the changes aren't crazy. Theres a few times where I didn't know the new rule and decided that verifying wasnt worth the time. In those cases I would revert to 2014 rulings. My goal though is to be up to snuff on 2024 ed eventually.
I mean, if you're just a player then all you really need is the new PHB. They've got some free rules up for the 2024 update, so you can scope the changes out there and see if you're interested in them.
^^ this. The PHB's got some good stuff that I think is worthy.
That said, if money were an issue, I'd be totally fine sticking with 2014. 2024's got some things I like, and some things I don't. It's got more that I like than things that I don't like. I don't think it's better or worse enough to get too worked up about either way.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
My opinion is that the rules per se aren't worth it. They're largely the same and of the ones that have changed...some are good, others I've rolled back to 2014e or house-ruled anyway. If you were choosing which one to buy, I'd say 2024e, but if you already have 2014e... it's not really worth the cost for the updates. On the other hand, 12 quasi-new Classes and 48 quasi-new Subclasses is not to be sniffed at. It could well be worth it for the additional options.
You may not have a choice in the matter though. If the table you're playing at is playing one set of rules, really you need that set of rules. However, if you're the one dictating which rules you play, then I'd weigh it based on the quasi-new Classes and Subclasses versus the size of your wallet - Bill Gates and a homeless guy would find it a no-brainer for opposite choices. You know how much $200 means to you.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Definitely worth it to me, but your mileage may vary. The changes are not huge, but they are somewhat significant. If your budget is really tight there is nothing world-shattering that is updated. If you care about future content it's a no-brainer to get the new PHB.
Start with the Basic Rules, which are free, to see if you like the changes. While many of the changes are minor, to the rules of the game, there are some major ones, and there are definitely some major changes to how the classes work. But the BR will give you enough of an overview to let you know if you want to use them or not. After that it's down to what the group as a whole wants. None of the groups I'm playing with are using them, for example.

Just get the player's handbook if anything.
