I was having fun theory-crafting about cosmology and realized that there's a strong incentive for Devils to kill undead, especially Liches. Why? Because undead and particularly Liches act as a repository of un-hell'd souls. An aspiring Devil should want to destroy undead hoping that the souls animating the undead are hell-bound; and a Lich might have very many souls in its phylactery.
Imagine some "good" Lich that traps only the souls of murderers; they'd be a prime target for a Devil to destroy.
I also think an awesome phylactery for a Lich would be a religious holy object; maybe THE center of a religion and a race of beings identified with that religion. Like the Ark or the Holy Temple Mount; the Lich may take a "behind the scenes" approach in developing the religion to protect its phylactery.
This makes the rouse even sweeter if the religion happens to be lawful good; then would-be heroes have to destroy many lawful good NPCs or a whole lawful good religion to even attack the Lich.
It's certainly an interesting idea and one I don't recall seeing before.
Thanks; I look forward to expanding these ideas. Lately the cosmology of DnD sorta fascinates me and there's a lot of "logical outcomes" if one just thinks about it that can be delved into a bit.
I am currently intrigued how the Nine Hells while "evil" is more of a natural extension of the lawful side of things, and how Angels seem to forgo their duty to hold back the Demons of the Abyss. In a way the gods are "selfish and cowardly" while the primeval pact gives the charge of defending the material realm to Asmodeus.
There's also a lot about the magical economy I'd love to tinker with to and share in other threads I suppose.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
