I am currently struggling to write a backstory for a character I created recently. Here is a quick profile and some character notes...
Name: Kyra Esmeld Gender: Female Race: Tiefling Age: 23 years Skin color: Stone-Gray Blue (with Dark-Gray Horns) Eye color: Golden-Brown Hair color and style: Dark Green, Wavy Bob Cut Class: Rogue (Thief)
Kyra is (for the most part) a friendly and approachable person with a lax and easy-going attitude toward life. Her occasional awkwardness and habit of spacing out has led many to underestimate her.
But beneath her normal demeanor, Kyra is cunning and observant of the world around her, displaying motivation for whatever she sets her mind to, and willing to learn and adapt in order to face whatever situation she finds herself in.
Kyra moves and thinks at her own preferred pace and couldn't care less what others may think about her.
As a thief and pickpocket, Kyra only targets corrupt individuals who prey upon the weak and defenseless.
As you can see I have my character's personality down, but I am still trying to come up with her background history and reasoning for setting out on a journey. If there are any tips or ideas you have, please share in this thread. I would really appreciate the input.
How many corrupt people could she reasonably encounter without travelling? Also, that sort of thing tends to make enemies which would also encourage you to travel.
And maybe I'm too old school but when did simple curiosity and wanderlust go out of style for reasons to explore the world?
Possible reason; she targeted the wrong "corrupt" individual and now is marked by a warlock and it got too "hot" to stay in town. Tipped off by her lifetime friend and fence, word on the street was that a new-guy in town was a warlock and put a mark out on her and she should lay low a while; maybe take a... paid vacation. Since nothing said she can't pick a few pockets and pilfer a few tapestries along the way. But, she's stubborn, she doesn't like to admit she is running from an obstacle. The paid vacation sounded like her idea, a nice idea. She needed a vacation anyway; and when she returns to town she'll deal with that pesky Warlock.
Only - she never realized the vacation she was about to embark upon wouldn't bring her back to town for a very long time; and by then, maybe the devil the Warlock made a pact with would instead be dealing with her.

That's a nice, simple reason to start travelling. I know Kyra loves visiting new places and taking in the sights (while trying not to get caught by authorities). It makes sense for her to express the desire to see the world beyond her small hometown.
