Hi. I’m kind of new to DMing. I can’t find the complete stats on weapons. In stat blocks for premade characters they show +5 to hit and 1d8 +3 slashing. But the players handbook just shows 1d8 slashing. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifier—the same modifier used for the attack roll—to the damage roll. Usually Strength for melee weapons and Dexterity for ranged weapons.

So then the +5 to hit is just your ability modifier. Ok thank you.
The +5 to hit usually include your proficiency bonus on attack roll only, which in this case presumably is +3 ability modifier +2 pfoficiency bonus.
Ok. Thank you. That makes sense.
