I think it's been lurking in the background for many years but Stranger Things certainly helped bring it back to the forefront. Some of us "older" folks fondly remembered playing it and came back into the fold after many years absent.

D&D has always been the most prominent tabletop RPG, due largely to simply being one of the oldest and having had its own magazine, numerous video games, several movies, a cartoon series, best selling novels... It's so well known that to many people "Dungeons and Dragons" and "role-playing game" are synonyms.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
