Once when I watched the cover of "Wild Elves" for Dragonlance I tried to imagine a mash-up setting mixing Dark Sun and Dragonlance. Maybe the deity Raitslin from the alternate apocaliptic future wanted to fix his world and then he started to "borrow" elements from the Athaspace.
I loved Dark Sun but it is not so good for 5e standars because the region of Tyr is relatively small and it is too linked to the main metaplot. Other serious handicap is the "banning" of players options like classes and PC species.
The return of DS is possible, but I doubt it was more two titles like in 4ed. If we are lucky maybe the setting will be unlocked in DMGuild.
WotC will have to choose the fate of the dark domain of Kalidnay within the demiplane of dread (Ravenloft).
The Orrery of Nibenay (from "Marauders of Nibenay) showed the Athaspace had got several celestial bodies. This means other worlds besides Athas are possible in the Athaspace allowing the posibilities of a spin-off.
The time travel in DS is possible acording the "Mind Lords of the Last Sea" and this should mean an opened door to explain the reboot of the setting or at least the creation of an alternate timeline.
The adventure "the black spine" showed a new faction. Let's use the name "City of Spires" if somebody doesn't want spoilers. This faction isn't "from the region of Tyr" and it could be the reason because the Athaspace can't be visited by spelljammers from other wildspaces.
I guess the return of DS will be something like the Dragonlance adventure or in 4e, a book for crunch and other for monsters. A rerush of the adventure "Freedom" is possible.
We know almost nothing about the "land-within-the-wind" the Athasian Feywild but maybe some Athasian species arrived here to escape the cleasing war.
Sorry, I am rambling but I mean if there is a return of DS we aren't going to see a detailed description of the lore but some pages about the city-states and stats for the sorcerer-kings. The strategy by WotC will be something like a spin-off where the region of Tyr would be only a portion within a bigger space. We will not see an advance of the metaplot about the region of Tyr.
