You go somewhere in the Border Kingdoms or the Unapproachable East where an Evil Paladin of Conquest has made his domain. He serves the Archdevil, Zariel. He has an army made up of Cavaliers, Templars (purple dragon knights) and mercenaries (inquisitive rogues). The villain is based on Vlad the Impaler.
Conquest Paladin of Zariel (smile quietly to myself thinking of fond memories of the last campaign I DM'd where I had Zariel and one of her warlocks corrupt one of the group's Paladins who then switched their oath to Conquest not realizing until it was too late that the Solar they thought they were cozying up to was actually Zariel in her previous guise - and eventually became a servant of Zariel) - fond memories indeed.

Go try and slay him and his minions or join him depending on your moral compass?
It works as a concept, I see no issues here.
(Edit/Note) Make him/Her/Them Lawful Evil, and contract orientated, makes for a complicated character to design that way.)
I was thinking of making him lawful evil.
Lawful Evil works good.
After the party kills the Paladin, have em return as a death knight for extra fun: https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17128-death-knight
What if the Antagonist has a Fire Hellion working for them?
