I’m looking to create a custom familiar of a creature for my wizard. Is there a way I can do this so that when I go to extras to add a familiar it’s there for me? I’d like to be able to create different versions of my familiar so that it can be custom to the situation.
3. Choose a monster closest to what you want to create. For example, I wanted to create a green pseudodragon familiar for a player, so I chose pseudodragon (familiar variant).
I have done this as well, and the steps outlined by Szabot are correct.
One thing to note, is that you do NOT need to share your creation with the Community when you are done creating it. Anything you create in your Homebrew Section will be available for your characters as long as they are in the Campaign you created within DDB. You only need to share it with the community if you are creating it for someone else to use.
Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
Hi guys, I'm having trouble in finding my homebrew familiar in Extras. I created a celestial familiar for the Party's Warlock using an Imp as a template, but I don't find it anywhere.
I just did this for one of my players and found I needed to add it as a pet. Otherwise it will tack on the stats to the familiar from the beast master subclass (she plays a druid). The pet option worked great, though.
I know this thread is a bit old but I'm having the same problem lol. Mind telling me if there was something specific you had to do to find it?
Sure -- Just go to the "extras" tab (on the web version), click on "manage extras", and under the "choose a category" option select "pet". Choose what you'd like as a pet, and once it's on the character sheet you can customize it to some degree. Once you know where to click it's really pretty easy.
Make sure you have 'allow homebrew' ticked in character creation. Then it should appear in the Extras tab on the Character Sheet if you click Manage Extras --> Add an Extra --> Familiar
ok so im trying to do these instructions and im failing bit can i have some extra guidance? ive created a homebrew bird called john for my druid and i cant find a bird or similar to work off of, on top of this i wanted to try to find the bird on the familiars tab but the entire thing is a confusion to me does anyone have any suggestions for my situation
I see this is your first post, welcome to the Forums, there is a LOT of helpful information here.
I'll try to help you as best as I can, but have a question so I can give you the correct guidance :)
You said that you 'created a homebrew bird called john', did you create this bird in the Homebrew section of DDB, or just on paper? As you noted that you 'cant find a bird or similar to work off of', I will assume that you have not created it within the DDB Homebrew section.
In the Monster drop-down, select Raven (as Ravens have basic 'Bird' stats).
Change the 'Monster Name' to "John".
In the 'Version' field, enter 1.
Edit (or delete) the 'Traits Description' as I assume John will not have the same Mimicry that a Raven does (unless you want him to).
Scroll way down and click on Save Changes.
Viewing your Character Sheet in your Browser, go to the Extras tab.
Click on the Manage Extras button.
In the Fly-Out on the right, under the Add an Extra drop-down, select Familiar.
Within the Search Filter, type "John" and you should see your Familiar listed.
At the bottom of the listing for John, click on the ADD 1 button, this will add it to your list of familiars.
Note: This is all assuming that you are using the "Find Familiar" spell to summon John. If you are not using that spell, then he would be classified as a 'Pet' and should be added to the Pet section, not the Familiar section, but the process is the same.
Hope this helps... let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers!

Hello everyone,
I’m looking to create a custom familiar of a creature for my wizard. Is there a way I can do this so that when I go to extras to add a familiar it’s there for me? I’d like to be able to create different versions of my familiar so that it can be custom to the situation.
Yes, you can do this. I have. Create a homebrew familiar using an existing familiar as a template, and it will be available under familiars in Extras.
Do I hit create monster?
1. Go to My Homebrew Creations.
2. Select Create a Monster.
3. Choose a monster closest to what you want to create. For example, I wanted to create a green pseudodragon familiar for a player, so I chose pseudodragon (familiar variant).
4. Homebrew to your heart's content.
Greetings J Gordonoglan,
