Let me start off by saying I have read the 2024 rules. I have even gone online and of course here for my information as well before I am posting this. Allow me some lattitude if you would to explain a bit.
The first game of DnD I played must have been back in 1978/79. Played again in the 80's to early 90's. Recently, a friend I played with back in the 80's invited me here. I thought it would be fun. Reliving the old days etc... Long story short I played a few run through adventures, all of them lvl 20, so I used premade characters. Not the best way to get back into it but I chose Barbarian class for the roles as they are hack and slash machines mostly anyways.
Finally I was asked to create a lvl 1 and I would join a lvl 4 party already in session. So I began creating onw. Bought the PHB2024. DM Guide 2024 and MM and a couple others. I set out to make the character. Being a bit of a wise ass, I chose a Goliath Rouge. Gave him an Origin Background and selected a Feat. (initially I clicked from the character sheet, but there must be a flaw because it does not limit, even with the switch on, what are "available Feats". ex. It allows Shadow Touch at lvl 1 even though the book and online clearly say lvl 4)
I chose Alert once the original error was corrected. No prereqs and I read that backgrounds give a character a Feat.
I am being told I am wrong. But everything I see says differently. I know DM's perogative and all that, but the DM is not claiming that, he is saying noone gets ANY Feats before level 4. He is also relying on others he believes know more about the game, and perhaps they do. Hell I have been out of it for about 30 years so who am I to talk?
I gues I am asking opinions, am I right in my thinking and reading or is there something else that I am missing?
He and I have been friends a long time. Hard to get through to him sometimes. Others are encouraged to put in their 2 cents worth as well Sortta an informal poll.
Can you shed light on whether this is also put into place? I pulled it from a post in a thread on here... "Part of the reason for this is that in the 2024 revision to the core rulebooks, all characters will get a Feat at Level 1, and only a subset of the full list will be available before Level 4."
It sounds like you made a 2024 character and their game is still using the 2014 rules. If they are, and variant human is not allowed , then the no feats before L4 rule makes sense. If they claim that they are playing 2024 rules then show them the feats and background sections in the 2024 PHB. If they are using the 2014 rules there are ways to still use them on here (DDB) but m not that familiar with them.
Your GM is wrong if they allowed you the use of 2024 rules. Every 2024 background comes with an origin Feat.
If they are using 2014 rules, you can get a more broad array of Feats if your race is Variant Human like Jumondur said.
I also have to say if they are making you play a lvl 1 PC in a party of lvl 4 PCs, Well....that's a dick move.
He did run me real quick up to lvl 3 in a solo. But then I failed a stealth role when sneaking up on the party......400 yards away....... rolled a 1. He would not allow me to roll again and I had to use that one roll for all 400 yards. I protested.... things got somewhat heated and i left.

I have sent screenshots. Tried explaining when they first told me on voice that I couldnt. I asked about 2024 rules, they did not respond directly to that. And they have been playing ... "Dragonkind", Draconian? Something like that. There is also a birdman of some kind etc.. So maybe 2024? Havent read enough to know yet.

Thanks in advance.
They are completely wrong. Even with the 2014 rules, variant humans are able to get a feat at level one.

Thanks, Jurmondur.
