So I’ve had an idea for a new character for me to use
the idea is that I would have a rogue/warlock (multiclass at least 3 levels for each so I can get the subclass) who thinks he is the is constantly being led and helped by his patron but it is actually spells that he casts himself, the thing is he’s to dumb to notice that he is the one actually casting them. His race would have to be some small race (I’m thinking kobold) so that he can be lifted up by the mage hand from the arcane trickster subclass.
and the cherry on top is that his warlock subclass is the great old one patron so his patron probably doesn’t even know he exists xD
feel free to give feedback if you think there’s a better race than a kobold for this purpose, or about the idea overall
Edit in response to comments: I’ve kinda given up on the whole mage hand idea so now I’m aiming for a character who thinks he is getting his magic from a patron who is guiding him (with still the whole spell idea from before), now I just need a class fitting for that
ps: I want him to be kinda preachy too, saying things such as “my divine patron has imbued me with the power of fire!!” Even though he is just casting a fire spell so a charisma based class would be good
Well, first things first- there is absolutely no way you can lift yourself with Mage Hand. It has a carrying capacity of 10lbs, and no PC race is that small.
Honestly, from an efficacy perspective I’d say you’d be better served skipping over Warlock as an actual class on the character and just run an Arcane Trickster who thinks they’re getting their magic from a patron. The kind of split you’re describing tends to be really clunky and frustrating to play, particularly if you start in first tier making it an uphill slog to pick up features, as opposed to a campaign that starts you at 10+ so you can have a more complete kit from the outset.

Ok I thought that might be the case. Do you know of any other race I might be able to do that with?

I was thinking a Fairy might be small enough, but they can already fly and then I realized they were 'small' (2'-4'), not 'tiny' (under 2').

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
on the mage hand thing, instead take the spell levitate, now there is two ways to get levitate.
1. The Ascendant Step Eldritch Invocation, Warlock gets this as a level 5+ option and allows you to cast Levitation on self, there is no reason you can role play this one as if it weren't a giant mage's hand that only maintains it's strength when in contact of the caster. This isn't homebrew, it's merely reflavouring.
2. Arcane Trickster can just learn the Levitate spell, this isn't restricted to self but does cost spell slots to cast.
This option doesn't give as much mobility as the original idea as you only freely control your own height but it's a workable idea.
I think an Archfey works better for tricking their own warlock as many Fae are into tricks and/or pranks. The character thinks their Patron is being all high and mighty when really it's just a few pixies having a joke at the character's expense and they are deeply unaware of that.
But you can still to a Great Old One, A GOO would know if they had a contract but they are most likely indifferent to the existence of their own warlocks, probably just wanting some quick service that serves their greater interest... so if you want to go down that route, the character already fulfilled their required service and now the GOO just sees them as a mild annoyance, sending them off to do small meaningless tasks, just to get some measure of peace from their zealous behaviour. They think the GOO is watching their every action when really the GOO is just off chilling else where wanting nothing to do with their warlock.

Nope. 10lbs is like the size of a housecat
