hey guys so im making a leprechaun pc and i need a good backstory, hes a college of glamour bard and an archfey warlock with a charlatan backround but i cant get a good idea for a backstory. im thinking maybe because leprechauns are lucky he couldve gotten cursed to be like really unlucky so now hes trying to break the curse, or he set out to gather the most gold, or even hes a young leprechaun in training and the term leprechaun is a title rather than a race. but i want him to be greedy with a giant stash of gold, not nice and willing to help. kind of selfish and maybe even apathetic? idk, help me out here.
Sounds like the perfect use case for these normally useless AI chatbots. ChatGPT is great for bouncing ideas off of and then picking from the suggestions and mixing them yourself and unlocking those new ideas in your brain.
I literally just copied and pasted your question and here's what I got from ChatGPT:
Absolutely—this is a killer character concept with tons of flavor and narrative potential. A greedy, selfish leprechaun with a double-dip in College of Glamour Bard and Archfey Warlock opens up all kinds of juicy contradictions—fey glamour and charm paired with manipulative self-interest, illusion masking cold ambition. Let’s forge that into a backstory that drips with style, mystery, and enough arrogance to match his vault of stolen gold.
🪙 Backstory: “The Curse of Gold Unending”
Name: Finnrick “Finn” O’Shade Race: Custom lineage or fae-adjacent (Leprechaun is a title, not a race) Class: Bard (College of Glamour) / Warlock (Archfey) Background: Charlatan
Once, Finnrick O’Shade was a mere aspirant, a low-tier feyling studying under the whims of the Everspring Court, where the title “Leprechaun” is not a race, but a rank—a spiritual successor to the ancient goldwardens of the feywild, entrusted with guarding and growing the wealth of the Fey Courts.
But Finn? He didn’t want to guard gold. He wanted to have it. All of it.
Charismatic, cunning, and sharp-tongued, Finn scammed his way through the lower tiers of fae society, charming mortals into terrible bargains and hoarding every scrap of ill-gotten treasure in a pocket dimension he stitched together with glamours and lies. His tongue could talk a dragon out of its hoard—or at least convince it to invest in a dubious pyramid scheme involving cursed trinkets and eternal youth potions.
Eventually, he tried to swindle an Archfey patron—a capricious entity of glamour and illusion known only as Lady Thistleveil—out of a portion of her own treasure. She saw through him instantly.
But instead of destroying him, she blessed him.
Or so it seemed.
She granted him incredible power: bardic glamour drawn from the court’s legacy, and warlock magic directly bound to her ever-shifting will. In return, she gave him a curse so refined it was practically art: he would forever be surrounded by gold… but never satisfied by it.
No amount of wealth can bring him joy. He must continue collecting, hoarding, scamming, and conning, desperate for a fullness that will never come. And worse: his luck, once enviable, now twists against him at pivotal moments—as if fate itself is mocking his greed.
💰 Personality & Motives:
Greedy, but not stupid: He knows people will try to take what he has, so he hides, deceives, manipulates. He’d rather charm you than fight you—but if he has to fight, it’ll be dirty.
Self-serving charisma: Think more Loki than Tinkerbell. He plays nice to get what he wants, not because he cares.
Apathetic with flashes of desperation: The curse eats at him. Occasionally, he wonders if this is all hollow. But that fades quickly under another pile of gold.
🎭 Signature Gimmicks:
He wears rings and charms with fake enchantments, scamming people out of magic items or coin.
His “gold hoard” is a portable pocket dimension—only he can access it, and it's cluttered, chaotic, and full of cursed or counterfeit treasure.
He speaks in flowery half-truths, mixing charm with manipulation.
He’s always “on stage”, leaning into his bard side like a smug showman, even in the direst of situations.
🎯 Plot Hooks:
He's seeking a mythical coin said to "undo all debts"—he believes this may be the key to breaking the curse.
He heard rumor that someone else was once cursed by Lady Thistleveil… and escaped. He must find them.
The Fey Courts want him dead, or worse—re-promoted to a "real" leprechaun, stripping him of individuality and binding him to eternal servitude.
Let me know if you want a short story-style version, a voice line set, or an NPC-style character sheet for him!
