Hi folks, I have a question about one of the adventures in this box set, in the Vanishing Gnome adventure, when characters enter S4 - Forge of Annihilation.
It says I the forges details, A creature that enters the forge for the first time or starts its turn there must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 4d8 Necrotic damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
is that an affect that comes into play as soon as they enter the room?
if so, that’s going to instantly kill most 1st level characters, with an average 18 damage on a fail, 9 on a success, who are also likely injured already with dwindling resources to help them with their challenges.
and then there is the potential of a Demogorgon Spawn in the room too!
Is this encounter totally Overpowered? And what can be done about it? Or am I missing something as to when the characters receives this affect…
And if it’s a room hazard, I don’t see how the players can do the following…
The Forge of Annihilation causes living creatures to wither and die. As a Study action, a character can inspect the forge and make a DC 13 Intelligence (Arcana) check. On a successful check, the character identifies the eldritch hazard and the threat it poses.
they enter the room most of the party die or fall unconscious, they inspect the forge, and hope they can get out before the start of there next turn or die for sure then?
I do not own Welcome to the Hellfire Club digitally, (I only have the physical copy), so it took me a bit to find the exact spot that you were referring to above, but I found it.
If you re-read the first paragraph after the two 'read-aloud' text boxes, it mentions that the Forge is "a cursed apparatus" and also states that "as a study action, a character can inspect the forge", so it is not the room, but an apparatus that is inside of the room and can be inspected.
The Forge itself is in the room, just like the 'Forge of Gibbletrax' in area D4 in the 'Dungeon of Shadows'.
So other than the Demo-Spawn that 'might' be in there (if the character's didn't already kill it), they will not take damage in the room, only if they enter the Forge itself.
Hope this helps :)
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
I was wondering about this too. That makes sense that it's the forge itself that is the hazard and maybe the players could push the potential demo-spawn into it and really do some damage?
Yes, that helps, thank you for helping me clarify that…
though now I’m hilariously wondering why someone would enter a forge/cursed apparatus that fits into a five foot square.
Player: “Can I squeeze myself into the entrance of the forge?”
DM: “You can certainly try”
i think I’m going to play it, if they put a hand in it or disturb the green slurry with a weapon for example, have it affect them then, assuming they have not figured out the danger!
Yea, that sounds like a fun way to play the room and Forge.
I don't think it's placed into the room as a possibility for characters to enter, but more of a 'contained environmental hazard', and like Stephensable mentioned, maybe the characters can push the Demo-Spawn into it, or pull him into it with something like the Thorn Whip spell.
Cheers!

The forge refers to the object mentioned in the textbox and that is displayed on the image.
S4: Forge of Annihilation: An unholy forge dominates this grim chamber. Caustic fumes waft from its icy hearth, which swirls with a faintly glowing, pale-green slurry. Skulls bob along the liquid's surface.
