How rare is it for a Dwarf and an Elf to consider each other friends and live together in a father/daughter relationship. Would be even be possible, or is it something that could never happen?
----
So I have been working on an Elf Character for.rhe past few weeks. When she was 200, her home was destroyed and her friends and family was killed, so as far as she knows she's the only survivor of her tribe.
She was hiding while this was going on and when she saw Elves starting to die, she became terrified and ran away.
She ran so so far that she found herself no longer in the forest but in a vast open plane with mountains on the horizon.
With nothing left or her home or family, she set our for the mountains but the journey was longer and more arduous that she expected and by the time she reached the foothills, she was half dead from exhortation, severely dehydrated and weak from hunger.
She was found by a Dwarf. A Master-smith who had lived the majority of his adult life in exile because of his love for all things elvish.
The dwarf nursed her back to health and having no children of his own, adopted her has his surrogate daughter. Eventually the two became great friends and he taught her metal working and how to work the forge.
For 150 years, the two were happy living together as a family but now that the dwarf has lived out his life and is in his waning years, he wants the elf (my character) to take over his work and continue with the forge when he's gone.
She doesn't want to do this and it has become a point of contention between the two. So much so that for the last 50 years, she has lived in another part of the world (where the campaign) would take place.
While discussing this with my friend though to help me hash out my character - character - he said that none of that would ever happen. That dwarves and elves hated each so much that it would be impossible for either of them to overcome their differences; let alone, live together as a family.
So question to the everyone on the forums is this:
How rare is it for a Dwarf and an Elf to consider each other friends and live together in a father/daughter relationship. Would be even be possible, or is it something that could never happen?

What are your thoughts and opinions.
A caffeinated nerd who has played TTRPGs or a number of years and is very much a fantasy adventure geek.
Usually, Elves and Dwarfs do not like eachother; however, it is your character and your world. So I would do whatever you would please.
