I am a relatively new DM (I have been running games for about 6 months now), and recently had someone make an interesting request.
After one of my sessions had ended, I was taking feedback from my players when one asked me if there was any way I could help with role-playing. She specifically asked me if there was any way I could help the group do an "RP warm up" of sorts at the beginning of each session; a way to help them get into the minds of their characters before immersing them into the world and the next chapter of the game. Many of my other players agreed this was a good idea.
I think it's an interesting idea to do something like this, especially if my players think it will help them RP better (they are also relatively new to D&D as well), but I can't seem to come up with a solid idea. I have thought about running a few NPC encounters; one hostile, one friendly, etc., but nothing is really sticking out to me. I'd like to open it to anyone who may have their own idea, or who may do something similar to what I'm talking about and how you've done it with your group.
Maybe have each player recap a part of what happened last session IN CHARACTER?

That’s a good idea.
Maybe before jumping back into the game run a minute or so warm up scene for each character of a flashback in their story. Maybe of when they got to the tavern where they met their party or of the merchant shop scene where they bought their prized weapon or piece of gear. Or of the exchange when they aquired their holy symbol or arcane focus.
For a more remedial/instructional RP measure, You could start a debate between characters. Pick something two of the characters (but not necessarily the players) should disagree on, such as which tavern has the best ale or atmosphere, or which town would make for the best vacation destination, then let them argue. Or one on one have an NPC insult something their character holds dear and let them react. Just use someone outside the story arc, in case they decide to murder hobo the offender.
