Three of us are going backpacking in the Enchantments (Washington State) and we want to play while we're out (3 days). Are there any short campaigns in which the story/guidebook is the DM? Think choose-your-own-adventure books.
Example: -instruction manual has the world and basic plot/goal -there are multiple places to go -we do a thing > "turn to page 8"
Currently reading about "The Executioner's Daughter". If that doesn't work, my plan is to write down a bunch of common elements on a deck of blank cards, take turns drawing, and see where we go.
There aren't any that I can think of... however if you want to do short campaigns, you could try looking up some quick adventures and perhaps just see if one of you could dm (npcing the character they control normally but mostly do it for roleplaying and not heavily influencing the story and leave that to the remaining two) and just keep it light... maybe a small mini battle and a little more roleplay heavy (assuming the group likes roleplay).
...and that's exactly what I ended up doing. It worked really well!
I used some maps from Dyson Logos blog, threw in some enemies from ******* bestiary, and we finished in two sessions, probably 3 hours total. I had more stuff planned so we're going to continue into a larger campaign. Happy to write up a full description/DM playbook if anyone is interested.
I highly endorse playing while backpacking. It was spooky being immersed and exploring a cave then hearing real-world clomping and looking up to three deer just outside your tent.
Thanks JW!
