It can be pretty intimidating at first - but we're a mostly harmless bunch.
Are you looking for a gaming group, or do you have one already?
Have you read the Player's handbook at all?
Have you seen online gaming podcasts like Critical Role at all?
If we know more about where you are, and where you're looking to go, the better we can help steer you in the right direction.
If you're brand spanking new to the hobby, then I'd recommend Handbooker Helper- it a new podcast on YouTube, without a ton of content yet, but it might bring up to speed on Player basics.

I totally concur on the nixing of the suggestion to read the Player's Handbook (or the Dungeon Masters Guide) first. Start with the free basic rules, or buy the Starter Set. You can find it at FLGS or on the interwebs for like $20 USD. The Starter Set has everything you and up to 4 of your friends would need to dive into D&D. Only after you understand the basics do you need to shell out the bucks and time to digest the PHB and DMG.

I recommend starting by reading basic rules (they're free). If you have any questions, you can post them here.
