I played a campaign where I was a lvl 20 evocation wizard. They're very powerful and if used correctly could (in theory) out damage a party's main dps (depending on the skills used). Just as a warning though, they can be pretty complicated to use and maintain. If you have a lot of spells with tracking, it's a bit of a burden to maintain in encounters. However, if you like utility or support, wizards have tons of opportunities to choose from.
Did your wizard start at level 1? I just want to know if its possible to get one from level 1 to level 20
I haven't done it, but it is certainly possible. It is mostly a matter of time (the element I'm lacking). Long campaigns that have characters go all the way to level 20 take a long time to play through.
I’ve only DM’d a couple of one shots, but I’ve been told by DM’s who do full campaigns that the problem is it’s hard to run a game with high level PC’s. I can believe it since I used Banishment once to make a DM throw out a combat encounter that he had planned on taking up a couple of hours and it’s “only” a 4th level spell. Every class has hidden gems like that spell that can short circuit at least one type of encounter if the dice fall the right way and that makes it hard to DM higher level characters.
I've playered a dragonborn wizard (made it to 15th level) and another winzard who was a high elf (made it to 17th level). Both campaigns ended before we could reach level 20 . . .
In both cases we started at 1st level. Both characters were straight wizards also.

Yes, in that specific campaign, we went from 1 to 20. It was milestone-based so EXP was not a factor. Note that Wizards have the ability to prepare completely different spell lists. This means you can completely swap out your spells with an entirely new list if you really wanted to. They're very versatile casters, but also complicated.

I heard a lot of people hyping up level 20 wizards, but has anyone who played a wizard actually made it to level 20?
I’ve never played any character who made it to level 12, let alone 20!
