I puzzled this question out when I had a "last of tribe" type character. Was the Ancestral theme strong enough or would it be better that he was guided by the spirits of the animals? I choose the animal spirits. It was still a great character. What I did not anticipate was having some much fun roleplaying as a Totem Barbarian... but, I could talk to animals way more than the Druid in our party (with a bit of a windup time because of ritual). He collected the animals, but I was the one that was finding out most of the information. I just wish the DM had dealt with the spirit aspects of the animals as totems more.
If you are wanting to have those kind of interactions but with the spirits of your ancestors, then go Ancestral. To me it is a bit more reliant on role-play than the Totem line because you don't get quite as much combat effectiveness, but it has potential to be even more meaningful if you can collaborate with your DM about working with the ancestors at the table. In the end this was part of what shifted me away... I had left the lands where the spirits would have lingered and was dealing with things they had never encountered in cities they could not have imagined.
Good luck! It's a fun choice either way... especially if you have a DM that will utilize the spirits of the Animals or the Ancestors to bring a big impact to the game.
1 level of Barbarian min 13 strength 13 wisdom. then concentrate on dex and con for AC. Your feats are pushed back one level but you get them all. You’re the Barbarian crawling out of the wilderness to become a ranger. Maybe use an Air Genasi or a Goblin, you could have two 16’s.
I know all that come with the classes that are mention in this thread, I just want to ask others and use they idea for future games for me.
For me I would do ghostwise halfing, gloomstalker, totem or ancestral.
