I'm looking for some advice on backgrounds and which one to choose
I'm fully aware of Homebrewing a background, mind you, but I'm still curious about which background to choose for a character. A human Blood Hunter (Order of the Lycan), who was once from a family of witch/demon hunters, much like Castlevania's Belmonts, but was disgraced/disowned due to some incident (haven't gotten that far). I'm unsure whether or not to use the Noble, Knight, or Soldier because my character fits into either background. I think I may workshop all three into a homebrew background, but I'd like to hear what you have to say for the sake of simplicity and/or time.
Look into the homebrew Exile backgrounds on here. I had never given that background a thought till last night when I was making a character for my daughter. She wanted to be an exile for just doing too many things her tribe didn’t approve of. (Maybe I should have a therapist look into that.) But there were several versions that dealt with nobility.
As far as the three official ones, I think Knight might be closest to the background you laid out. Though, Knight of the Order from Sword Coast Adventurer’s guide looks like a better fit. As does Urban Bounty hunter from that same book.
One background I don’t know if it occured to you to consider from the PHB is criminal. Since he’s not in your mind a lifelong lawbreaker, I’d overlook it making the character, too. But as a blood hunter from a family of demon/witch hunters, it gives really fitting equipment and features, and being that he’s disgraced he’s commited some offense. Maybe assign the hired killer or enforcer criminal specialty. He gets dark clothes, proficiency in stealth and deception, and the feature is the ability to deliver messages through a network operating outside the official channels of society.
