We've all been through Session 0's before, right? If you haven't, it's basically character creation and the occasional "My character would be doing this before meeting up with the party" bit. They're a lot of fun for your PC. But you know what else is fun? Playing as the villain(s).
The story behind this: A friend of mine wanted to run a few of us through a one-shot where we all play as enemies you can find in the books (Monster Manual, Volo's Guide, Tome of Foes, etc.). Our only restriction was that we can only choose monsters that were a Challenge Rating of 3 to 4. Our party composition was as follows: Spectator, Flameskull, Doppelganger, and Red Dragon Wyrmling (which I played). Our DM put us against three NPCs that were each 10th level, so it was a fair fight. With that said, we kicked the hell out of the adventurers! Our adventure concluded with us taking refuge in the dungeon we were told to protect, with my Red Dragon Wyrmling as the head of the base.
So where does the whole "Session -1" title come into play? Easy: world building. This whole session took place four hundred years before our current Bard party campaign (yes, we're all playing Bards), so we basically developed villains for the future of the campaign. It does take out the surprise a bit, now that I think about it, but it was still a lot of fun playing something I wouldn't normally get to play. What do you guys think about the idea of Session -1?
