Wondering if anyone can tell me their experience with using DnDbeyond on a tablet at all? I'm thinking of getting 6 or so tablets so I can load up the characters on them for games I do (I own a Dice store and will be going around to FLGS playing DnD and such, and dont want to have to bring a printer around with me :D).
Cheapest thing I can get is a Fire 7 from amazon, but not sure how DnDbeyond plays on something that is a 7 inch screen and low res like that. Wondering if folks can tell me how their experience has been with DnDBeyond and which tablet you've used.
On the Fire 7, it will have the mobile view. In my opinion, the mobile view is very easy to use, but you do have to switch between screens to get at the data. If you want to simulate it on your laptop, just increase the zoom to like 150% or 200% and you'll see a HUGE view of what you would see on the tablet.
The great part of using DND Beyond for the characters is the power it gives the DM. You can view everyone's characters, equipment and so on. You can also add equipment if you want, etc... So my DM has had some homegrown items and rather than us fishing for it, he just adds them in. Next time we play, they are there!
If you can swing the tablets, I think your players would be very lucky and would love it.
I use an iPad and it shows the desktop view. A little nicer, but you can get quite a few Fire 7s or Samsung Tab As for one iPad. And no side loading as everything is still web based, unless they use the app which doesn't yet have character sheets. Then side loading is needed.
I haven't used a Fire, but on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A (8") I get the desktop view. When they hadn't enabled that view for the tablet resolution it was fine, but not ideal -- I much prefer the desktop view in landscape. You can get a good feeling for what the smaller resolution tablet display would be like on your phone, it's definitely effective -- just lots of switching around, as BrassZeus says.
I use my laptop which flips into a windows tablet... the screen is 14" so it's a large surface this works amazingly. I tried to bring my standard size IPAD the other day and found it a bit on the small side even with the superior resolution. I may have been being too picky, but I would say that a 10" tablet is the minimum size for comfortable viewing. Once the characters are a couple of levels in they will have more and more abilities (especially spells) which become more difficult to see.
If you go with a samsung tab e 10" you can get them for under $200 each.
What I'm getting then is I need a tablet with a higher resolution so I can get the "desktop" view then ideally, to reduce the amount of pressing folks need to do. Pointless to have it if its not going to save time.
I think $200 tablets are out of reach, i need 6 of the things so maximum budget was more around £70 or so each (~$70). I''ll keep my eyes out for some offers and deals but certainly keep in mind the higher resolution benefits.
I use a Surface Pro 2 and a web-browser for accessing D&D Beyond while DMing my campaign's sessions. It's only technically a tablet, but it works pretty well for what I use it for. Definitely outside your budget, though. I can't think of any reason a lesser tablet would be particularly worse for your players, though, with the exception of any player who also wants to use their tablet to take notes during the game - a full keyboard is *exceedingly* useful for that, so I'd prioritize a tablet that has some sort of keyboard accessory (and allow the players to decide whether or not to get that rather than automatically provide it due to financial constraints).
I have no idea whatsoever what things besides Surfaces have keyboards and are also tablets, though - last time I went tablet-shopping was about five years ago, as evidenced by the fact I have a second-generation Surface rather than something from this half-decade. Maybe there are some in your price range, maybe not. Good luck.
So, im in the IT game, and have access to a lot of devices, including a kindle fire 7”. It displays the full “desktop” experience in dndbeyond.
It is pretty small, and certainly a much nicer experience on a full sized iPad or other larger tablet.
side note, a larger kindle fire I have was displaying the “desktop” experience even before the recent change away from mobile for large tablets. I’m wondering if the silk browser used by Kindle fires was not being given the mobile experience (never checked on the 7” before) IIRC Badeye indicated they would deliver the desktop experience to standard iPad and larger devices - so I figured the 7” would be getting the mobile experience (EDIT. this appears not to be the case see below)
if it is the case that dndbeyond just isn’t handling silk “correctly” then I suppose at some point Curse may make a change that would force the mobile on to this smaller device.
i would hope not though, it is still plenty usable.
UPDATE: I just checked an iPad mini, and it displays the desktop experience as well, so maybe mobile is strictly phone sized devices now.
I have a fire and have installed d&d beyond on it but the only thing that comes up is the compendium. I am unable to access the home page to use any tabs. Does anyone have an idea what the issue might be?

Big thanks guys :)

Legendary Bundle ~ Master Tier
I tried it on the Fire HD and I thought it was pretty slow and miserable. Ipads, even the older 3, do a good job.

The app does not support character sheets atm. You have to use ddb in your bowser.
