I have created a backstory for a Half-Orc Warlock for a 12 hour campaign upcoming. I have two thoughts/questions while trying to make/improve this backstory.
Question 1:
How many hooks are appropriate? I am assuming about 5 people in the campaign and it will be a heavy RP vs combats campaign.
Also, I am also starting a longer campaign. Lvl 1 through to 20, how many hooks are appropriate/good/appreciated by the DM?
Thought 2:
I am having somewhat of a challenge making a plausible high charisma half-orc solely for the purpose of intimidation and warlock spellcasting ability. I placed a voluntary weakness of my character of -5 for all non-intimidation skill checks as I don't really imagine the character persuading or deceiving well. I am looking for a novel idea for a good tie-in for this. I don't feel like going for the "ugly half-orc" route.
Rag - Backstory
Rag was raised in a loving mixed family. His mother, a witty orc from the Big Bone Tribe, grew fond of his father, a shamed Warlock from Luskan. His mother died when he was 12 from Orc flu contracted after cleaning her teeth with a found walrus tusk. His father quickly took to the arms of a Loxodon.Rag was furious and attempted to burn down their home and left forever for Waterdeep taking only the clothes on his back and “Gnorl”, his Mother’s favourite club,She could take down a horse in a single blow with “Gnorl”.He would miss mom.
While in Waterdeep, Rag studied under a Warlock who took him in as a “Guard Dog” and to figuratively clean his backside. While working a second job cleaning latrines across the city, he witnessed a sergeant from the City Guard, Barnel, threaten a stall merchant to pay for his protection.Intrigued, Rag followed until he was noticed and confronted.Barnel threatened Rag but instead of cowering, Rag stood his ground and grabbed the sergeant by the throat, “You WILL teach me!” Stunned, Barnel thought for a moment and quickly realized the potential of Rag in helping make the rounds.
Rag took to his new job with enthusiasm, making enemies of many of the merchants.Even though Rag actually liked the merchants he simply loved intimidating them to get their payments of which he gave most to Barnel.Rag was really good at using “Gnorl” and his thaumaturgic abilities to scare people to the point of peeing their trousers.
One day while looking at the notice board, he came across a bounty for a human male and a Loxodon (sex unknown) warlock that were terrorizing the countryside.Could they be his betraying father and that cow whore? No, he is not my father anymore.
Barnel was arrested a few months later and sent to jail for five years. He was as close a friend as he ever had and was torn up inside.Rag really wanted to help his friend but didn’t know what to do.
Weeks passed as the depressed Rag trudged on, scaring children and old folks instead of Merchants, until one day….
