So a player in my campaign as recently made a wizard character upon the death of his former paladin.
In terms of Wizards learning spells, via leveling up, as per the mechanic if a player wanted to learn additional spells, albeit with the same prepared spell and caster level limitations, can this be done? Thoughts?
Hey Marlin. Just to clarify, are you asking if and how this player can learn additional spells via writing in their Spellbook, not just via leveling up? I’m assuming this is to catch the wizard up to the same current level of the party.
I had a similar situation with a player who switched to wizard after a PC death. What I did was have them take the gold amount (and gold equal to the cost of any magic items that weren’t recovered from the party) left from their dead character and use that as a “spell fund” to copy any spells appropriate to their level into their Spellbook.
Theoretically a wizard can eventually learn every single wizard spell in the game if they have the money and the time. So no they aren’t just limited to the spells they automatically get each time they level up. They could buy scrolls, find enemy wizard spell books, pay an npc wizard to teach them. It all comes down to the dm and what they allow. I would definitely give the player a handful of extra spells if they aren’t starting at low level.
