Hello everyone. I am in the midst of a research project for a local business that has a lot to do with GMing, and thought that this would be the perfect place to ask for some help. If I could get a whole bunch of responses to the following query, I would be eternally grateful:
Think back to the best GM you ever had in any tabletop RPG gaming experience. What do you think made them such a great GM? Give a specific example of something they did, and explain why you think that makes them great.
Matt Colville has a video on this subject. In his presentation he says a terrible DM is ...
So don't be a terrible DM. A beginner DM does this ...
So you may be a beginner DM. But an average DM does this ...
But there are better DMs. A good DM does this ...
But there are some DMs that are great, and they do this ...
But there are a few DMs better than any other that do these sorts of things ...
Matt does a better job of describing it and it would probably resonate with you better than if I tried to write you a summary. It is a stair step progression. It starts with things like be prepared, know the rules & progresses to the top level where he says some DMs can tell when the pace of the game is getting to slow and they know how to pick it up if things are dragging. Enjoy. I think the video is called the 5 tiers of DMs.
