Okay, that's kind of a misleading title. I know that beholders are genderless more or less, but can they be more feminine? an NPC in my campaign is Mar. she is a very evil beholder who will oppose the party multiple times throughout the campaign. notice the she. Mar is odd in that she has a more feminine voice and thinks of herself as female. could this be possible? since beholders are born from dreams, I don't see how this would be impossible, but just making sure. Thanks for the responses in advance!
I would say, yes, there could absolutely be feminine beholders.
This actually has me rather curious. Does Mar require her minions refer to her with female pronouns (disintigrating those who slip)? Does Mar wear makeup (not to cover her blemishes, because she thinks her form is perfect, but to accentuate her features), and is she any good at applying it?
To reply to DxJxc, she mostly just wants people to call her by female pronouns and just gets kinda angry when people mix it up. to answer the 2d question, no, she mostly just looks like a normal beholder, with slightly smoother skin. Thanks for all the responses so quick!
My personal lore (meaning not 100% found within canon) is that beholders are sexless. Often times beholders, gazers and other aberrations are "born" into existence when a beholder has a *really* bad nightmare.
Depending on what is "born" will dictate the "parent" beholder's reaction. Gazers and other aberrations are turned into slaves / servants. While a young beholder is attempted to be killed or driven off because beholders are highly paranoid and hate competition from other beholders.

Fellow player, D&D can be anything you want it to be. If you want a feminine beholder, you go right on ahead and have one.
Okay. just wanted to make sure I wasn't smashing the lore. Cheers!

Google Dragon Magazine 156 for a picture of a female beholder.

Somehow it is exactly what I expected, but still unnerving.
Reply to Drhman1971. Huh. that's interesting. Is this official? either way, Huh.
It was the magazine by TSR the official publisher of D&D at the time.
That’s really I N T E R E S T I N G.
For context, it's their April issue from that year, and they often did April Fool's goofs. So take the "official" with a grain of salt.
Ahhhhh...... Gothya. Still a cool bit of trivia though!

That's good lore too! I think that that the DM makes the lore and the "official" stuff is material for you to build off of. Cheers!
