I've been working on a world map for my new setting for a couple days now and I've come up with names for kingdoms and major cities, but I have not been able to think of any for oceans. Does anybody have any suggestion, or how do you name your oceans?
Well, "Atlantic" is from the Greek meaning "of Atlas", basically, the Atlantic Ocean is Atlas' Ocean (since he holds up the world, I guess). The Pacific Ocean is means "Tranquil Ocean" (Pacify - Pac-ific). Mediterranean Sea is "middle of the world" -- when the Roman Empire was "the known world" that sea was in the middle of it.
This is how the real world named bodies of water.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
I haven't come upon this issue yet and have run many many campaigns. The people near the ocean just called it the ocean or the sea.
It is possible I've ignored it as my campaigns don't span multiple continents across the globe. If there is no trade or limited exploration across the ocean I'm not sure if it needs a name.
Edit: The one time I did give a name was to the ocean in the Underdark which was the Sunless Sea.

use large, strong, or wide-sounding phonetics. For example, Atlanta (the root for Atlantic) sounds wide and strong.

I tend to use Sanskrit or other language translators, and punch in a bunch of related words...
