I’ve tried to run games for some friends trying to get in to dnd, or that I’ve talked in to giving it a shot, and the main issue I run in to is I can only keep them around and interested for about the length of a long board game.
im looking for suggestions of a short one shot that’s still engaging for a new group of players (2-4 all new) to show them some of the funner things without being too daunting. I’ve seen with a lot of my groups as they’re new they sent to go very slow, so the shorter/still interesting the better.
Jailbreak, or robbery. They need to be "invested," which might be difficult depending on party make up, but gold is always a good motivator. They'd have to get info about the "job," so there's some RP time, maybe align with an NPC, and then the actual task at hand and some decent combat. Then, reward time.
Or, a "contract hit" against a powerful foe that's been terrorizing a village, or something. Some aberration (and it's minions) have taken over a cave and are wreaking havoc. Rumor has it that it's got a great treasure hoard...
Duergar raiders have attacked a secret gnome outpost. During a desperate rescue mission, adventurers encounter giant snails, a net full of gnomes, an octopus, a sealed scriptorium, death, a ruined birthday party, a berserk construct, a haunted letter, and much more.
Having seen it run twice and run it three times myself, it clocks in right around 4 hours (there is a fair amount of optional content in the appendix to use if you want it to run up to 7 hours - if you just want 4, don't use that stuff).

I wrote this one-shot with new players in mind:
