Sorry, I don't see another forum to put this question forward, so hopefully this is as good a place as any. In addition I apologize if this is answered elsewhere, I couldn't find anything helpful on a search.
When creating a weapon, is there a way to build it so that it evolves based on the wielder's level? Like with a sub-class, you can design class features that are available at certain levels, but it doesn't seem the be the case with weapons. Unless I'm overlooking something obvious. Currently the only option I seem to have is to build versions and swap them out via Manage Equipment as my player(s) level up.
That is correct. Unless the abilities are spells which have up-casting already in the spell description, you will need to do a writeup of each version. You could put it in the initial weapon creation but that takes away the surprise when the weapon levels up.
An advantage to this process is that things might change from now until the weapon levels so a version more fitting to the campaign can be created.

There is an option to put in a "spoiler" text box but I'm pretty sure that will just add hidden text rather than change the weapon stats.
Thanks, it sounds like I haven't overlooked anything, at least.
Follow-up question, if I may: If I create a homebrew feat, is there no way to add this as a granted feat via said homebrew item/weapon? It doesn't appear to list any homebrew feats under feat modifiers.
Thanks, I did see that forum but it was listed under Dungeons and Dragons, not D&D Beyond specifically, so I wasn't sure if that was meant for discussions outside of using the builder or both. I'll note that for the future! :)
All builder questions can be posted to general. We'd move to 'Homebrew' if the discussion was based upon building/designing the content itself, rather that integration with the builder.
Maybe make a subclass that has a spiritually bonded weapon, that does a low dice of damage and up the level, changing dice at each tier, instead of adding dice such as 1d4 at 1st level, 2d4 at 2nd, 3d4 at 3rd, 4d4 at 4th, and 4d6 at 5th.

Would welcome any thoughts on this. Thanks!

There is a homebrew forum where you could have asked this question (this thread will likely get moved there).
Items don't (currently?) support changing features depending to the character.
The feat modifier is a little buggy, I don't know if anything actually uses it, so it might be a leftover without much functionality.
