Decided to take a break from literally decades of DMing and I am finally going to sit in the player's seat. An old group of friends is playing Tomb of Annihilation and they are now 6th level. I don't know exactly what they are playing yet but I was told they have 2 Fighter types with limited casting ability and a Cleric. They have no arcane casters. Any recommendations for a character to compliment their group? I am also open to ideas such as Lore Bard but not sure at 6th level if 2 spells from another class are enough to fill their "caster" role. So throw ideas at me.
It depends on what you want to do. Bards are very versatile and great for any party. They have the skills and spells to be a backup of any class or fill in any holes. Warlocks are glass cannons with eldritch blast and recover during a short rest. They have very consistent damage and have a lot of specialized options. Sorcerers are crazy and have cool features that allow them to nova lots of things(2 targets). Their meta magics have some cool features and they also get a lot of cool cantrips. I feel as though sorcerers best shine when helping other classes during multiclassing. Wizards seem boring till you play one. For a wizard, every problem is solvable with magic and no problem is unsolvable
EDIT: forgot druids, THEY ARE SPELL CASTERS. I personally love druids. Depending on what path you go and they can be a summoner(shepherd) to a healer bot(dreams). They allow a very flexible playstyle why supporting the party with some cool thematic spells.
I am very partial to Wizards. Only once ever had someone play a Wizard in my campaigns. Unless someone comes up with a great idea for another class I will most likely go with a single classed Wizard. I need to really go through the archtypes and figure out how they play and what I want.
Honestly, I don't consider arcane casters to be essential in party composition.
They have a healer (which I do consider essential). So they need a caster with utility spells. Wizards are the kings of utility spells. Bards and warlocks can be good utility classes too.
Bard especially can double as support, skill monkey, and/or face if they are lacking characters for these roles (bards are jacks of all trades after all). If one of the fighters is more of an archer build, you can support the front lines as a sword or valor bard, otherwise lore bard for more spells and skills. (I don't even really like bards, but there is no better glue for holding together a hodgepodge party).
The think to think about is what roles their party is missing or wants.
The roles you could consider for a caster:
1) Ranged damage dealer - such as Warlock. I suspect that since they have two fighter-types, they're not lacking on damage, though they might be lacking at ranged damage if the fighters don't bring bows, and they'll be lacking in AOE.
2) Skillmonkey/utility - Lore Bard. A bit of ranged damage. A bit of debuffing and buffing. A million different proficiencies.
3) Utility/Support - Wizard. Huge range of spells, and if you think ahead you can find yourself having just the right spell at just the right time all the time. (You also have the spells to do massive AOE or ranged damage, for short periods of time.)

Sounds good! I had a blast playing a wizard too.
I personally was inspired to play a support "god-wizard" by the intro story in https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IeOXWvbkmQ3nEyM2P3lS8TU4rsK6QJP0oH7HE_v67QY though I didn't take it to the crazy no-damage extreme of that story.
